JR Pass

A Japan Rail Pass provides unlimited travel on the JR Neworks.
There are some restictions on the Shinkansen , see below.
You can make a seat reservation using you JR Pass , it is better to make a reservation on a Shinkansen than chance not finding a seat .
There are both Resevered snd Non-Reserverd Cars

You can specify the dates you want the pass to be active Depending on where you want to travel and how long you want to stay in an area , check that the pass you buy covers that area.

How to Get a JR pass
You purchase a Exchange Coupon prior to arriving in Japan, I use JTB Travel but there are a other sites offereing them.Allow two weeks for it to be delivered.
You cannot purchase a JR Pass in Japan.
Once you arrive in Japan you go to the Shinkansen Ticket Office in the city you are staying (assume landing in Tokyo or Osaka) and exchange you a Exchange Coupon for a JR Pass
You can specify the dates you want to activate it .
If you have a few passes for a few different dates , exchange them all and set the dates at that time

Tip
If you are only traveling beteen say Tokyo ,Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima consider a short duration National pass for the start and end of your trip to cover the long distances , then us local trains and purchase tickets (IC Cards) for the area you are staying in. I found a good was to use a National Pass for a week to travel to the area I wanted to see , we stayed moved around that area for a couple of weeks and use the pass and pay for local trains. , the activate my next pass to the next fartherest point.
Or even consider taking a local flight or hiring a car to next destination .
